Suede
30th Anniversary Edition
(Demon)
By Paul Davies

It was Camden Town, and not Soho, that became the centre of attraction for bands of the shoe-gazing variety, a number of which looked up further, in early 90s London. Pre-Brit Pop, it was an indie-bound movement that squired interest from record companies desperately seeking the next musical trend to backseat drive onward to commercial success. One of the many promising - and there were many - groups getting their act together and creating a buzz in the pubs and small clubs was the glammy Suede. Fronted by two skinny long haired personalities that rubbed up - not along - against each other, electrifying guitarist Bernard Butler and overtly fey singer Brett Anderson quickly engaged a fan base and label interest resulting in this debut album going down in indie folklore. Selling 100,000 units in its first week of release, Suede won the 1993 Mercury Music Prize also achieving Number One spot on the UK album chart. A golden run of singles: The Drowners, Animal Nitrate, So Young and Metal Mickey maximised their initial exposure setting them up for a career on the charts. This 30th Anniversary half-speed master 180g vinyl edition includes an obi strip and a four-page booklet. It whistles a wistful and reminding tune back to an era when a gene pool of bands was vying for the prize of making a living from their musical heart. For many, this debut album still beats the strongest.
