MANFRED MANN: ‘HITS FROM THE SIXTIES’

(UMBRELLA MUSIC BROLLY BOLP 1 – CD / VINYL RELEASE)

RELEASE DATE: FRIDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER 2023

The remarkable hit-making run of MANFRED MANN is celebrated in the shape of a twenty-track compilation entitled ‘HITS FROM THE SIXTIES’, released on the UMBRELLA MUSIC label on FRIDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER, 2023 – on CD and high-quality double vinyl. It is graced with a superb 1966 portrait of Manfred Mann drawn by their bass player and designer of THE BEATLES ‘REVOLVER’ sleeve, KLAUS VOORMANN. The informative, engaging and entertaining sleeve notes are penned BY MANFRED MANN, TOM MCGUINNESS and MIKE HUGG, and shed much light on the creative process of the recordings, and also the hothouse atmosphere and remorseless churn of the 1960s Pop machine.

This collection maps in chronological order the development of Manfred Mann from an energetic, sparky rhythm and blues / Jazz combo, through to a fully-fledged chart pop act, creating some of the most enduring and memorable hit records of the 1960s – including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, ‘Come Tomorrow’, ‘Oh No, Not My Baby’, ‘My Name Is Jack’ and ‘Fox On The Run’.  Their rambunctious ‘5-4-3-2-1’ was the theme for the defining Pop programme of the mid-sixties, ‘Ready Steady Go’, and the band also briefly featured the late, legendary Jack Bruce, just prior to his forming Cream with Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton – Bruce played bass on the joyous ‘Pretty Flamingo’.  Also included are several Bob Dylan compositions, including ‘If You Gotta Go, Go Now’, ‘Just Like A Woman’, and the chart-topping ‘Mighty Quinn’, which shows the unerring Pop Alchemy of Manfred Mann working in full effect. A bonus track closing out the album is a 1968 BBC radio session recording of ‘Handbags and Gladrags’, penned by vocalist Mike d’Abo, which has been covered by Chris Farlowe, Rod Stewart, and Stereophonics, famously utilised as the theme tune from the smash hit TV comedy, ‘The Office’.
