Demon is proud to present the fourth instalment of the critically acclaimed ‘Year’ series featuring the works of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. ‘Whatever Happened To The Teenage Dream?’ covers the 50th anniversary of 1973 and takes in a very active period of musical change for Bolan recording both in the US and Europe.

The 4CD and 5LP sets include the ‘Tanx’ and ‘Zinc Alloy’ albums, along with the non-album hit singles & B-sides, including ‘Children Of The Revolution’, ‘Solid Gold Easy Action”, ‘20th Century Boy’ and ‘The Groover’ as well demos and outtakes from both albums. The sets also focus on Marc’s initial forays into the world of soul music and highlights from the unfinished album he wrote and produced for the American singer ‘Sister’ Pat Hall. There is also a single album anthology entitled ‘Songwriter: 1973’.

Both the 4CD & 5LP sets feature a brand new 16,000-word essay by acknowledged Bolan authority and author Mark Paytress, detailing Bolan’s life through this eventful period along with many previously unpublished photos taken by Keith Morris, as well as ephemera from the era.

As 1973 got underway, Bolan astutely realised that the Glam Rock world he had pioneered had become crowded and trite in his wake. He knew he would not stick around that scene and had to move on musically.

For the cover story of the 16 June 1973 issue of Melody Maker, Bolan declared, “Glam Rock Is Dead”. “I don’t want to go on the road now for fear of being involved in the dying embers of Glam-Rock. I don’t feel involved in it, even if I started it. It’s not my department anymore and personally I find it very embarrassing.”

Within weeks, Bolan’s peers followed suit; on 2 July 1973, Brian Eno left Roxy Music and the following day, David Bowie killed off Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars at their final concert at the Hammersmith Odeon.

Having completed the fourth T. Rex LP ‘Tanx’, released on 16th March 1973, Bolan began planning the recording of a new LP with additional musicians, including American backup singers ‘Sister’ Pat Hall and Gloria Jones. Bolan later wrote and produced nine tracks for a solo Pat Hall album which was ultimately shelved. The music featured a hybrid of T. Rex and US soul musicians and can be heard in this new 1973 box set.

During this time, Bolan fully embraced the US soul sounds he’d heard on their stateside tours. The subsequent album recorded in Munich in 1973, ‘Zinc Alloy’ incorporated these R&B influences and those of his new partner, the singer Gloria Jones, into his songwriting. It was the final T. Rex album to be produced by Tony Visconti, with Bolan nabbing a co-producer credit for the first time.

The album’s full title is ‘A Creamed Cage In August’ from the band ‘Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow’ as Bolan wanted to drop the T. Rex name altogether for this record and even toured the UK in January 1974 using the Zinc Alloy moniker. John Kosh, who worked with The Beatles, The Plastic Ono Band and The Rolling Stones, designed an award-winning multi-fold latticed sleeve for the release which utilised the Zinc Alloy name without mentioning T. Rex at all, but EMI got cold feet at the last minute and insisted on the addition of a “Marc Bolan & T. Rex” flash on the sleeve’s corner. The Beatles were put under similar pressure for their Kosh-designed Abbey Road sleeve but held their ground. Over time the record has come to be known as “Zinc Alloy” although, like The White Album, that was not its actual name.

As part of the T. Rex 1973 year campaign, Demon Records will be issuing T. Rex’s 1973 singles as 1000-only limited edition 7” picture discs featuring photos from the Keith Morris archive. The first release is the incendiary classic ‘20th Century Boy’, which reached #3 in March 1973. It was Marc’s 9th consecutive top 3 hit single in little over two years, and has since become one of the best-loved T. Rex songs. It has been covered by artists such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Placebo and David Bowie, Def Leppard, Adam Lambert, The Replacements and Scott Weiland. The song also returned to the UK Top 20 in August 1991, peaking at number 13, after being used in a TV ad for Levi's starring Brad Pitt.
